Embassy in Brussels celebrates National Independence

Carmelo Nvono-Nca, Equatorial Guinea Plenipotentiary Extraordinary Ambassador in Belgium, the Low Countries, Denmark, Luxembourg, Turkey and the European Community, organised a reception on Saturday 14th October at her residence, to celebrate the 49th Anniversary of National Independence, which was attended by personnel from the diplomatic mission and other authorities, together with the Equatoguinean colony in that country.

During the celebration, the ambassador gave a speech, which we are publishing here in full,

Dear Equatoguinean colony resident in the Kingdom of Belgium, dear workers from this diplomatic mission,

Firstly, I would like to thank you all for coming today to this celebration, the aim of which is to mark the 49th anniversary of independence of our country, the Republic of Equatorial Guinea. It is a most memorable date for all of us, and fitting as an opportunity to praise the huge effort and bravery of the President and Head of State, H. E. Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, and his Government, to make Equatorial Guinea a better country every day. The arduous work and effort of the political authorities in our country is what has brought us today within a privileged framework and, above all, they continue to work in order to further raise the recognition and international visibility of our country.

2017 has been tremendously productive and successful for our nation. The most notable deed is probably the election of Equatorial Guinea as non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, the most important body, from an international point of view, in matters of peace and security. Furthermore, the success of the verdict of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, also shows that international justice also recognises the good practice of our Government, in detriment to western governments that to date have always made the rules.

Furthermore, delegations from our ministries for Fishing and Aviation have been visiting the Belgian capital during the year, to hold important talks with the European Union, taking significant steps with regards to the recommendations of this organisation and improving our reputation, once again, within an international context.

I would also like to tell you about some of the challenges ahead of us, for the final quarter of 2017 and 2018, which we hope will be as productive as this year. Equatorial Guinea is very close to becoming the world headquarters of the South-South and Triangular Cooperation within the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group, which would position us automatically as a global benchmark within the new dynamic that is appearing in international relations; the cooperation of countries from the North in order to save those from the South is being left behind. Now Africa, Latin American and Asian countries have the capacity and resources to equal and even move ahead of western countries.

Once again, I wish to thank you for your presence today at this celebration, to share with us our pride in celebrating the National Festivities. In the name of His Excellency I congratulate everyone on this day, and I hope that you enjoy a more than agreeable celebration of our National Festivities,

Long live H. E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo!

Long live the Republic of Equatorial Guinea!”.
