Equatorial Guinea and the United States are strengthening their cooperation on maritime defence and security, specifically piracy in the Gulf of Guinea. This was the backdrop to the meeting between the Vice-President of the Republic, H. E. Nguema Obiang Mangue, and David Gilmour, the US ambassador, recently appointed by the Biden administration.
According to reports from the International Maritime Office, pirate attacks in the Gulf of Guinea have decreased significantly, thanks to cooperative efforts among authorities in the region. Equatorial Guinea, in particular, has set maritime stability in this area of the Atlantic Ocean as a priority in its development agenda.
The Head of Defence, for his part, in addition to speaking about mechanisms to protect these waters, also spoke to the US ambassador about the upcoming general elections in the country.
