This diplomatic gesture is a tradition within the United Nations Security Council.
On 20th February in New York, Anatolio Ndong Mba, as Permanent representative of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea before the United Nations, met the General Secretary, Antonio Guterres, for lunch to mark the presidency of the month of February, in the presence of the Deputy Permanent representatives, Job Obiang Esono Mbengono and Amparo Mele Colifa.
The meeting served as an occasion for the ambassador from our country and the General Secretary to exchange impressions on some current international matters. In this case, the matters covered during the lunch were the recent African Union Summit held in Addis Abeba, the agreements recently signed in central African Republic, and the crisis on the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
With respect to Central African Republic, Antonio Guterres welcomed the success of the agreement between the Government and rebel groups towards a lasting peace, and praised the cooperation between the African Union and the United Nations.
With a view to the situation in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the UN General Secretary was not very optimistic as, in his words, it is necessary for the two disputing parties to do everything possible in order to be able to negotiate and prevent the country continuing with its internal tension.
