The work of the 74th Period of Sessions of the United Nations General Assembly began on the afternoon of 18th September, with the handing over of the gavel to the new president, the Nigerian, Tijiani Muhammed Bande.
Through this ceremony, the president of the 73rd period of sessions, Maria-Fernanda Espinosa Garces, said goodbye and recalled some of the activities carried out during her term.
The ceremony took place within the General Assembly, in the presence of representatives of member States, including the delegation from the Republic of Equatorial Guinea led by the Permanent Representative before the United Nations, Anatolio Ndong Mba, and made up of the deputy ambassadors, and personnel from our diplomatic mission in New York.
During the ceremony there was also a speech by the United Nations General Secretary, Antonio Guterres, which highlighted the work done over thirteen months by Espinosa; work which he described as excellent based on the results which , according to the UN leader, are also praised by all member States.
With the speeches over, those present were invited to hold a minute’s silence dedicated to prayer and meditation, and finally the new president of the General Assembly went to the podium to take the gavel with which he will guide the work until September 2020.
