The President of the Republic, Head of State Government, Founder of the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea, H. E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, granted an audience on Tuesday at the People’s palace in Malabo to Philippe Van Damme, Ambassador-Representative of the European Union to the Republic of Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon, with residence in Yaounde.
In the presence of the Deputy Minister to the Presidency of the Republic in the Department for Missions, Job Obiang, and the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Maria Angeles Miaga, the Head of State and his interlocutor discussed issues relating to the strengthening of bilateral and multilateral relations between the Republic of Equatorial Guinea and the European Union, with particular emphasis on maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, challenges relating to the economic situation, the fight against climate change and the 20th November elections.
Questioned by the national press, the European diplomat declared, “We discussed a variety of topics regarding our bilateral and multilateral relations, and we also discussed progress on the signing of the post-Cotonou agreement linking the European Union with African, Caribbean and Pacific countries; in addition we analysed the economic situation in Equatorial Guinea, the need to strengthen integration and the outlook for the country ahead of the elections on 20th November”.
Asked about European Union projects in the fight against maritime piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, Van Damme said that Equatorial Guinea must participate, as in the past, in regional dynamics, both in terms of maritime security and in the sustainable management of the forests in the Congo Basin.
