On Friday 30th March, the presentation of the IV edition of the three prizes awarded under the UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea International Prize2018 in Research in the Life Sciences took place. The ceremony took place at the Palace of Conferences in Sipopo, and was overseen by the President of the Republic, H. E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.
The schedule began with a screening of video of the history of the prize, the presentation of former winners, and significant moments from past editions. Following that, there were speeches from the Mayoress of Malabo, Maria Coloma Edjang Bengono; the Minister for Education, University Teaching and Sports, JesA�s Ngonga Ndong; the Director General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoluay, and the President of the Republic of Rwanda and President of the African Union (AU).
Following a musical break in the hands of Ballet Ceiba, the prize-giving began: professor Rui Luis Goncalves Dos Reis from Portugal, to whom H. E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo presented a statuette by the Equatoguinean artist Leandro Mbomio Nsue, received a diploma from the UNESCO Director General.
The second prize was for professor Ivan Antonio Izquierdo, from Brazil, represented by his wife, and the third prize was received by the Organisation for Agricultural Research, the Volcani Centre, from Israel. For scheduling reasons, they were not represented at the ceremony.
Once the prizes had been awarded, the ceremony concluded with a speech by the Head of State and a group photo.
