The Elephants of Ivory coast were proclaimed champions of the African Cup of Nations Equatorial Guinea 2015, after winning in the penalty shootout over the team from Ghana. H.E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo was in charge of delivering the trophy to the Ivorian captain, Yaya Toure.
The match began with domination by the team from Ivory Coast and one of its stars, Gervinho, made the first opportunities to open the scoreboard. Ghana was entering in play and had the best opportunity of the first half, when Atsu launched a hard shot that hit the post of the goal defended by Barry Copa.
Ten minutes afterwards it was the Ghanaians who again had a good chance, when the ball centered by the forward Ayew hit the exterior of the post. The match entered in a phase in which the play in the mid-zone of the field prevailed, and no clear opportunities to score were produced.
Ayew and Gyan directed the pace of the Ghanaian team, while Gradel was the one who took command in Ivorian team, since Gervinho and Bony were well controlled by the Ghanaian defense.
In the second half, the intensity of this African Cup of Nations was noted and the two teams lowered the pace. The selection of Avram Gran dominated the play and had a good opportunity in the launching of the foul by Wakaso, which brushed the post.
At 80 minutes the Ivorian players were the ones that had an opportunity, but the Ghanaian goalkeeper, Brimah, avoided the goal with a good intervention. Thus the end of the match was reached with the initial 0-0. The extra time did not accomplish anything and the Ghanaian again had a double opportunity, but were incapable of materializing it.
And the penalty shootout arrived, which required twenty-two shots. The next to the last, made by Brimah, was stopped by Barry Copa, who then kicked and made the definitive goal. The Elephants of Ivory Coast were therefore proclaimed the winners of the tournament, second African Cup of their history.
Next, H.E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo delivered the trophy to the captain Yaya Toure. The players were then photographed with the cup and celebrated their triumph with the fans present in the stadium.
