As on previous occasions, the residents of the capital gathered on the morning of Tuesday 5th June at the Malabo sports centre, to congratulate the President of the Republic, H. E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, on the 76th anniversary of his birth. The Head of State attended the event accompanied by his wife, Constancia Mangue de Obiang.
The event began with the arrival of the presidential couple at the sports centre. This year’s celebration, apart from the gifts presented to the President, featured the Equatorial Guinea Olympic Committee presenting him with the title of First Sportsman of the Nation. The Minister for Education, University teaching, and Sports, JesA�s Engonga Mdong, presented the title.
During the event there were speeches from various figures: a representative of political parties, the PDGE National Office represented by its General Secretary, Jeronimo Osa Osa Ecoro, the Government, represented by the Prime Minister, Pascual Obama Asue, the Supreme Court of Justice, by its president Juan Carlos Ondo Angue, and the Chamber of Deputies, represented by Gaudencio Mohaba Mesu.
In addition to the congratulations for the Head of State to mark his birthday, they also highlighted the work done for the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, and condemned the failed mercenary attack of December 2017.
For his part, the Head of State pointed out that, The fiesta this year has surpassed previous celebrations. I wish to express my gratitude, above all to the noble sons, men of culture, who presented the motion to make my birthday a national holiday. And they were two highly cultured men, Leandro Mbomio and Constantino Ochaga”.
The Head of State in his speech also insisted on keeping peace and security for the progress of Equatorial Guinea, and rebuked materialist policies, insisting on peaceful coexistence for national development.
Peace is an element which helps development, progress and well-being. We have seen countries which have reached higher levels of development, but end up destroyed due to their enemies”, he said, and addressing young people he pointed out that they should be noble in order to face their responsibilities.
