Minister for Social Affairs attends Commemoration of White Stick Day

To mark the commemoration of the White Stick which is held every 15th October, by the Equatorial Guinea National Blind Organisation (ONCIGE), on Friday 18th October the event was held which began the activities with a visit by the Minister for Social Affairs and Gender Equality, Maria Consuelo Nguema Oyana, together with students from the ONCIGE Braille School. Following that, there was a donation of sticks by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to the organisation, which was also attended by the Chinese Ambassador, Qi Mei.

The ceremony took place at the headquarters of the ONCIGE, and was also attended by the Vice-Minister for Social Affairs, the head of Civil Society, and the Director General for the Elderly, among other figures.

During the visit, the minister and her delegation saw the work carried out by the visually impaired, with respect to writing and reading, their progress and efforts, and the operation of the organisation by its president. Furthermore, they spoke about the achievements and projects, and the developments that are on the point of implementation.

Following a tour of the various classrooms, the ceremony began with speeches by the minister, the ONCIGE President, the ambassador and the vice-minister, who focussed on the importance of the day.

Following that, there was the formal presentation of the sticks that the Chinese embassy offered to the institution.

Some members with visual impairment benefited from these sticks following their presentation, with words from the Minister for Social Affairs closing the meeting.
