ADDIS ABABA, Close collaboration between Africa and the international community is crucial to ensure peace and security as well as economic development in the continent, AU Deputy Chairperson Kwesi Quartey said.

While opening the 5th International Conference on Strategic Theory, he said peace and security are the most important factors for economic development.

According to him, peace and security is the function of a lot of things. It’s related to economic development, democracy and good governance. So when you pursue the policy of good governance and rule of law economic progress for all the people in an inclusive scale the resultant effect is peace and security.

He further noted that ensuring maritime security and safety along with the general development strategy of African countries is critical as some 90 percent of the countries use maritime transport for their international trade.

Ethiopian Peace Security Training Center Commandant, Brigadier General Habtamu Tilahun said the conference will contribute to highlight the interplay of leadership and security governance on the continent and its surrounding seas.

I believe, this conference is a very important event that creates platform for participants who came from all over the world to share their rich experiences and knowledge that boost important discussions to set a way forward for the future, he added.

Brigadier General Habtamu pointed out that in Africa low-intensity conflicts are likely to remain regional challenge and constitute threat to stability and sustainable development in the continent.

He said capacity within Africa should be strengthened as part of the African peace and security framework to prevent and manage conflicts, respond to post-conflict situations and human needs.

Danish Ambassador to Ethiopia, Mette Thygesen stated on her part that the conference is of crucial importance to indentify challenges that Africa faces with regard to peace and security and put directions to resolve them.

The world needs visionaries and leaders, and the world needs prominent and practical research. I hope this conference will contribute to the partnership to stimulate reflection and generate new ideas, the ambassador stressed.

She revealed that her county will continue supporting the continent in its efforts to maintain peace and security in the continent. Demark has provided more than 100 million USD for capacity building of the Africa Union peacekeeping force since 2004.

The three-day conference is organized by the Royal Danish Defence College, Stelle-Bosch University and Ethiopian Peace Security Training Center.
