Ombudsman holds press conference

On 5th September, the Ombudsman, Marcelino Nguema Onguene, held a press conference to report to the population on the role of the department in his charge. The event took place at the offices of the Department of the People in Sipopo.

The Ombudsman clarified various aspects relating to the operations of the Government body, and other concerns that confuse the population.

Marcelino Nguema Onguene first thanked the press for their interest, pointing out that “this interest could perhaps lead to some of the questions being dealt with on the radio programme on Rafio Malabo, indicating the work of the Ombudsman’s Office. Unfortunately we do not yet have the possibility of expanding this programme to all the national media”.

According to Marcelino Nguema, Basic Law outlines in detail the role of the Ombudsman.

With respect to other functions in relation to the elections, he said that: the Ombudsman is not an administrative or judicial authority; what he does is take part as an observer in the elections. And also recommend solutions if irregularities are seen before, during and after the voting”.

In relation to the revolt by taxi drivers, he pointed out that: there is something we must take into account, that many people have not looked into our role. Many taxi drivers do their jobs unaware exactly of the regulations governing public transport; to date we have not received a single official complaint with respect to this anomaly”.
