Following legislative and municipal general elections held on 12th November 2017, the President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, H. E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, accompanied by the First Lady of the Nation, Constancia Mangue de Obiang, oversaw at the International Palace of Conferences in Sipopo, on Friday 12th January, the ceremony of the constituting session and opening of the first ordinary period of parliamentary sessions.
The act featured the reading of the acts of the constituting sessions by the general secretaries of each chamber. Teresa Efua Asangono and Gaudencio Mohaba Mesu were re-elected presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, respectively. The meeting was attended by senior figures from the country, such as the Vice-President of the Republic, Charged with Defence and State Security, H. E. Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue.
After swearing loyalty to the Head of State, there were acceptance speeches from the re-elected presidents of the National Parliament, corresponding to the II legislature of the Senate and the VIII of the Chamber of Deputies.
Gaudencio Mohaba Mesu and Teresa Efua Asangono coincided in thanking God and the President of the Republic for the trust placed in them, and promised to continue to work for the benefit of the interests of the Equatoguinean population.
For his part, H. E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, in his words, reflected on the coherence of the political system inspired by the Democratic Trial, which brought to a successful conclusion the work of past legislative elections.
In addition, he underlined the duty of National Parliament to oversee the actions of the Government in order to defend the interests of the citizens it represents, and to fight and contribute towards the eradication of the crisis of values which places in danger the social peace and development of the country.
Regarding the recent coup attempt, the President described the action promoted by paid murderers at the service of international terrorism, organised from abroad with the complicity of a group of puppets in order to disturb the peace and prevent development, progress and the international prestige achieved by our country, admired both here and abroad, as diabolical and criminal.
