PARLIAMENT TO BEGIN INTERVIEWING CANDIDATES FOR NEW SOUTH AFRICAN OMBUDSMAN

The South African Parliament will begin interviewing candidates to fill the post of Public Protector (Ombudsman) to succeed the incumbent, Thuli Mandonsela, who retires in October.

Candidates for the post of Public Protector will be interviewed By a Parliamentary ad hoc committee appointed to facilitate the process on Thursday. All 14 candidates will all be interviewed on the same day.

The candidates include Judge Siraj Desai, Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions Willie Hofmeyer and Deputy Public Protector Kevin Malunga.

The ad hoc committee will start its first interview just before 8 am on Thursday morning, with the last candidate scheduled for 11 pm. Each interview is allocated an hour.

The candidates are mainly from the legal fraternity with Judges Siraj Desai and Sharise Weiner the only two judges on the short-list.

Parliament received 79 nominations, with 15 of those nominees either declining or not meeting the relevant deadlines.

Madonsela’s non-renewable term comes to an end in October.
