A 33-year-old man is appearing in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court today on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. On 30 September 2016 at about 21:30, police at Ematsheni were patrolling in the area when they found the suspect at Ezinqeni area, Mazizini. He had in his possession an unlicensed revolver and 12 rounds of ammunition. He was then promptly arrested. The recovered firearm will be sent for ballistic tests to ascertain if it was not used in any other crimes in the province.
In another similar case today, a 22-year-old suspect is appearing in the Umbumbulu Magistrates’ Court for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. It is alleged that on 1 October 2016, at approximately 20:30, the KwaMakhutha SAPS acted on an intelligence driven information about the suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearms at Adams Mission. The members proceeded to the said place where the suspect was searched and found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with 14 live rounds of ammunition. He was subsequently charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The recovered firearm will also be subjected to ballistic testing.
The Acting KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa applauded the members for recovering unlicensed firearms and ammunition. “We will make sure that we apprehend all those who are in possession of illegal firearms,” said Langa.
