Speech by President at 32nd AU Summit

On Sunday 10th February, the decision-making body of the African Union took the initiative to designate H. E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, as leader for the main theme of this year for the AU: “Refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons: Towards durable solutions to forced displacement in Africa

The Head of State, in response to this trust, was one of the speakers hear following the start of the mandate for the new acting President of the AU, H. E. Abdel Fatah Al Sisi.

“I graciously accept this appointment and with your support we will make 2019 an exceptional year for lasting solutions for refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons in Africa”, assured the President, on assuming the responsibility that the AU gave him during the senior-level dialogue held between figures in the highest body on the African continent, within the framework of the summit that is taking place in Ethiopia.

Before the delegates present, H. E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who has just been entrusted by the international community to lead the United Nations Security Council during February 2019, in a seven-page speech, pointed out that this year was the fiftieth anniversary of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which governs specific aspects of the problems of refugees in Africa, and proposed to the plenary session four priorities in relation to the matter of refugees.
