The Speaker of the National Assembly, the lower house of the South African Parliament, Baleka Mbete, says it is too soon to say that Parliament has failed to conduct proper oversight over the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
Mbete said here Monday that South Africans should wait for the outcome of the Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee’s inquiry into the affairs of the SABC. Allegations of corporate governance transgressions and censorship at the SABC had surfaced during the inquiry.
Mbete said: “I do not think that we should pre-empt the work that has started. I think let’s wait until the process is over and then we will get a report.
“Then you can determine what you think on where things have maybe slowed down, or we didn’t keep on our toes … because there is a Portfolio Committee relating to the SABC in terms of the Communication Ministry and portfolio in government.”
