Sunyani Technical University admits over 3,000 freshers for 2023/2024 academic year

The Sunyani Technical University (STU) has admitted 3,362 fresh students to pursue various diploma and degree programmes for the 2023/2024 academic year.

According to Professor Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah, the Vice Chancellor (VC), the university issued admission letters to a total of 5,704 prospective students.

Freshers for the academic year showed an increase of 14.0 percent over last year’s figure of 2,949 students.

Addressing the 28th matriculation ceremony of the university at its main campus in Sunyani on Friday, the VC said 2,252 of the fresh students, representing 67.0 percent were male whilst 1,110 representing 33 percent were females.

In terms of disciplines, 2,833, representing 84.3 percent enrolled into science, technology, engineering and TVET based programmes as against 529, constituting 15.7 percent for Business and Administration.

That, Prof Adinkrah-Appiah explained, was in line with the university’s mandate as a Technical University and attributed the significant rise in the student enrolme
nt for the academic year to several factors, including good performance of students in the world of work, as well as advertisements.

He said the introduction of new Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes was another key factor that had contributed to the increase in the student enrolment, saying the university was undertaking a more intensive enrolment drive to continuously improve its annual enrolment into new and existing academic programmes.

‘When patronage of such industry-driven programmes is improved, it would help produce more skilled graduates who can readily find employment or set up their own businesses to reduce the existing high spate of youth unemployment facing our country in recent times,’ Prof Adinkrah-Appiah stated.

The university currently runs the following programmes under GTEC accreditation: nine Master of Technology (MTech), 26 Bachelor’s programmes (BTech. and BSc. Programmes), 23 Higher National Diploma (HND), five Diploma and eight other non-tertiary programmes.

Prof Adinkrah-Appiah s
aid all was set for the university to start apprenticeship programmes under the Phase IV of the Ghana TVET Voucher Project (GTVP) under the auspices of KFW, indicating that 100 Mastercraft Persons (MCPs) from various Trade Associations had already been registered to commence the training as an initial step for training of all Apprentices under these MCPs.

He urged all prospective students, both local and foreign, to take advantage to enroll on these innovative and industry-driven programmes to acquire the requisite knowledge, technical and professional skills that would make them readily employable to avoid the ‘temptation of joining the so-called Unemployed Graduates Association in Ghana after going through some other programmes which are more susceptible to joblessness.’

The University is also making efforts to introduce several tailor-made micro-credentialled Programmes (Short Courses) for industry practitioners within and around the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions, which would eventually lead to full
degree certifications.

‘Establishments such as Newmont Ghana Gold-Ahafo Mine, VRA, and the Ghana Water Company within the three regions are informed to take advantage of these programmes at the Sunyani Technical University to provide life-long learning opportunities for their esteemed staff,’ Prof Adinkrah-Appiah said.

13th African Games Ghana what to know

The 13th African Games finally kick off in Accra Ghana on Friday, March 8, after an eight-month delay.

ANOCA had threatened to pull out, citing an infringement on its marketing rights by the African Union.

This year’s competition is scheduled to run from March 8 to 23 2024, and will be the first to be hosted by Ghana since it was first organized in 1965.

It had to entirely serve as qualifiers for the Olympic Games, but due to the delay, not all disciplines will serve as qualifiers. Out of the 29 sports, just eight will serve as qualifiers; athletics, badminton, cycling, swimming, table tennis, tennis, triathlon and wrestling.

Cameroon’s Minister of Sports, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, presided at a farewell ceremony on Wednesday in Yaounde, organized for Cameroon’s sixty-five athletes who will compete in eight disciplines.

The 13th African Games will be played across three cities, Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast. The competition comes up every four years, one year before the Olympics, which will be held this y
ear in July in Paris.

Cameroonian MP files complaint against President Biya for holding dual roles

Cameroonian Member of Parliament, Jean-Michel Nintcheu, has filed a complaint against President Paul Biya, accusing him of holding ‘cumulative functions’ in violation of the country’s laws.

Nintcheu reiterated that Biya is operating simultaneously as President of the Republic of Cameroon and National President of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) party, which he deems illegal.

Nintcheu, a prominent political figure and former member of the Social Democratic Front (SDF), who now leads his own party, the FCC, asserts that holding both positions by Biya is unconstitutional.

In a viral video, he demanded Biya either resign as President of the Republic or relinquish his role as National President of the CPDM.

‘Either Mr. Biya resigns as President of the Republic to maintain his position as National President of the CPDM, or he resigns as National President of the CPDM and remains President of the Republic,’ Nintcheu stated firmly.

Furthermore, reports indicate that Nintcheu has also lodged a c
omplaint against Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, Minister of State and Secretary General at The Presidency of The Republic, alleging usurpation of the office of President of the Republic.

Both President Biya and Secretary General Ngoh Ngoh have yet to respond to the complaints filed against them by the Member of Parliament.

The legal action taken by Nintcheu has sparked debates across the country, drawing attention to the issue of dual roles within the government and political party leadership.

This development adds to the political tension in Cameroon, where concerns over governance and accountability have been mounting in recent years.

Douala: Bunch of car keys seized from a suspected car thief

Dozens of car keys were seized from a suspected car thief in the Village neighborhood of Douala, by an anti-crime unit at the GMI 2.

These are keys he used to force-start vehicles poorly stationed or parked at unsecured places.

‘He has been in this criminal activity for a long time. Stealing of vehicles not well parked and found at unsecured places. He used Toyota keys to start the Toyota vehicle and where the key did not correspond with the mark of the vehicle, he forced it to start. That is how your vehicle disappears.’ Head of the anti-crime unit of the GMI 2, Awa Christian, said.

The suspected car thief fell into the dragnet of the security forces following a complaint deposited at the GMI 2 by a mechanic about a stolen Toyota vehicle at his garage in the Village neighborhood on February 28, 2024.

‘That fateful day while at the garage, a customer brought his vehicle for me to resolve a mechanical problem. Since I was exhausted I couldn’t do it that evening and decided to do it the next day. Upon my a
rrival at the garage, I could not find the car. Since then I never had peace of mind. I decided to file a complaint. Narrated the mechanic.

The suspect was whisked to the Judicial police to answer charges.

Loum Council: Mayor’s driver suspended for tampering with civil status registers

The Loum Council in the Littoral region of Cameroon is reported to be in turmoil following the suspension of the Mayor’s driver over accusations of tampering with civil status registers.

Confidential sources within the council have revealed instances of the driver allegedly meddling with the records, including removing, overloading, and even making some disappear.

Sources revealed that after a closed-door disciplinary council, the driver was found guilty of several offenses, such as falsifying records and forgery. As a result, he has been suspended for two months, with his salary suspended as well.

However, concerns linger about the repercussions of this tampering on the accuracy of civil status records and the potential impact on residents.

‘After a guilty response to the request for explanation, after a disciplinary council behind closed doors, the Mayor’s driver was found guilty of falsifying civil status registers, false use of forgery, forgery in public writing and was notified of his 2-month suspen
sion,’ explained Cedric Le Fiscaliste on his Facebook handle.

Though the council has assured the public of its commitment to fixing the situation and rebuilding trust in its services, the incident highlights the absence of honesty and integrity in public offices.

The disciplinary action, however, to many, highlights the severity of the allegations and serves as a warning against any future breaches of trust within the council’s ranks.
