Malabo: Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has affirmed the relocation of the capital city from Malabo, located on Bioko Island, to the mainland city of Ciudad de la Paz in Djibloho Province, according to the state-run Information and Press Office of Equatorial Guinea.
According to Nam News Network, Obiang signed the decree on the relocation plan on Friday, January 2, 2026, during a ceremony attended by top government officials. The decision to move the capital to Ciudad de la Paz, which translates to City of Peace, is aimed at improving accessibility and addressing logistical and security challenges associated with the island-based Malabo.
The statement from the Information and Press Office highlighted that relocating the nation's capital is crucial from a security standpoint, as the government has faced several attacks originating from abroad via maritime routes. The move also represents an effort to break away from colonial-era structures that no longer serve the country's modernization goals.
