MTN and Huawei sign MoU for joint innovation tech lab


MTN Group and Huawei have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a Joint Innovation Technology Lab aimed to deepen cooperation in technological innovation.

The strategic partnership will see the creation of an Innovation Technology Lab at MTN Group’s headquarters in South Africa.

A statement issued in Accra said the signing ceremony, which was held at MWC Barcelona, Spain was attended by senior delegations from MTN and Huawei.

The lab will serve as a neutral platform for collaboration within Africa’s digital ecosystem, accelerating the development, deployment and adoption of innovative digital solutions driven across the continent.

It said together, the two companies would leverage this initiative to focus their research and development efforts on key areas such as 5G and beyond, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data analytics, cloud computing, and digital financial services.

The partnership aims to accelerate the time-to-market of MTN’s products and services while addressing the unique challenges fa
ced in Africa, including improving network coverage in rural areas and enhancing energy efficiency, and affordability.

The statement said additionally, MTN’s operational teams would actively participate in the innovation process, ensuring the solutions developed directly address real-world challenges and drive meaningful digital transformation and sustainable development in Africa.

Mr Mazen MrouĆ©, Group Chief Technology and Information Officer, MTN said, ‘The Joint Innovation Technology Lab is more than a partnership between two companies; it’s an investment in the growth of Africa’s digital ecosystem.’

He said the collaboration was essential for developing solutions that truly meet the continent’s needs, and the Lab would pave the way for a more inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous future for Africa.

MWC Barcelona 2024 was held from February 26 to February 29, 2024, in Barcelona, Spain.

During the event, Huawei showcased its latest products and solutions at stand 1H50 in Fira Gran Via Hall 1.

Mr. Bawa Fuseini, President of Ghana Athletics (GA) has assured Ghanaians that his team will put up an impressive performance at the African Games.?

Track and field sensation Benjamin Azamati, Joseph Paul Amoah, William Amponsah and Grace Obour have all shown readiness ahead of the highly-anticipated event.

Mr. Bawa speaking on the team’s preparation said ‘All our coaches are ready, Azamati came this morning, and the rest are coming tomorrow. Our spirits are high and we know we are not going to disappoint Ghanaians’.?

Assin Central NPP Parliamentary Candidate donates 15 bags of sugar to Assin Fosu Muslims


Mr Godfred Nti Anewu, the Assin Central New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate (PC), has presented 15 bags of sugar to the Muslim community in the area to commence the holy Ramadan month of fasting.

The bags of sugar were presented on behalf of the PC by Alhaji Hamda Mumin, Nasara Co-ordinator of the Party in the constituency.

According to Alhaji Mumin said the gesture was in support of the Muslim community as they embarked on a spiritual cleansing in the holy month of Ramadan.

He pleaded with them to also pray for the constituency, the country and leadership at all levels so that they could give off their best for the people.

Iman Iddrisu of the Assin Fosu Central Mosque, who received the items, expressed his gratitude for the donation and said it would be distributed accordingly.

Areas to benefit include the Assin Fosu Zongo community and Muslims in Assin Central.

The donation, he indicated, would go a long way to help Muslims in this month of Ramadan.

Ramadan is the ninth month on the I
slamic calendar and observed with fasting and prayers by all Muslim faithful around the world to commemorate Prophet Mohammed first receiving the Holy Quran.

Huawei and Global Sustainability Stakeholders Discuss How to Thrive with Green ICT


Mr Jeffrey Zhou, President of ICT Marketing at Huawei, says Huawei will continually work on technological innovation alongside global partners to enhance digital inclusion.

He said it would also promote thriving digital talent ecosystems and help enable an inclusive and sustainable digital world.

The President of ICT Marketing was speaking at the Green Development Summit on the theme: ‘Thrive with Green ICT’, during MWC Barcelona 2024 event.

He said digital technology had become a key enabler for global sustainable development.

At the summit, guests from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), MTN Group, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Kenya’s ICT Authority, and Indonesia’s Bandung Institute of Technology discussed how digital technology could be used to promote green development and enable an inclusive and sustainable digital world.

Mr Bilel Jamoussi, Deputy Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Standardization
Bureau (TSB) and Chief of TSB’s Study Groups Department, introduced the Green Digital Action (GDA).

He said, ‘The promotion and implementation of international standards is a key enabler for ensuring both wide network adoption and sustainable development.’

He said ITU and more than 40 partners, including Huawei, launched the GDA last year aimed to enhance collaboration, fast-track industry-wide commitments to addressing climate challenges, and put digital solutions at the forefront of climate action.’

At MWC Barcelona 2019, Huawei launched TECH4ALL, a long-term digital inclusion initiative and action plan.

Over the past five years, Huawei has worked with global partners to develop innovative applications supported by digital technology.

This has brought long-term positive changes to remote areas, the underprivileged, and environmental protection efforts.

Ms Susanne Pedersen, Director of IUCN’s Science and Data Center said, ‘IUCN maintains a suite of global standards for measuring the state of biodiver
sity and conservation for the global common good.’

She said Technological advances within remote sensing, AI, machine learning and E-DNA could potentially help conservation agencies realize faster and more reliable access to data and analyze data in a more efficient way to support more effective conservation.’

Dr. Miao Fengchun, Chief of UNESCO’s Unit for Technology and AI in Education, providing an update on the progress of the Technology-enabled Open Schools for All project, said, ‘UNESCO’s human-centred principles for governing digital education include using digital technology to enhance human competencies, ensure digital inclusion, address digital gender inequality, and regulate negative impacts on human well-being.’

At the summit, six European Universities and Colleges, namely the DTI Academy, Yalova University, Learneo-academie, Fondazione Cultura and Innovazione, Politecnico di Bari, and the University of Alicante, received the Huawei ICT Academy plaque.

These institutions will work with Huawei t
o facilitate digital talent cultivation in Europe.

AYEF launches Ghana edition of the African Trade Queen concept


The African Young Entrepreneur Federation (AYEF), a subsidiary of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), has launched the maiden edition of the Ghana-African Trade Queen concept in Accra.

The queen concept, which was under the theme: ‘Beyond Beauty, Fostering Trade,’ is aimed at ensuring that many young African ladies are empowered to trade seamlessly with other ladies on the African continent.

Mr Siita Sofo Hissan, the President, AfCFTA Young Entrepreneurs Federation (AYEF), speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), stated that Ghana has won the bid to host over 20 young entrepreneurial ladies from some selected countries on the African continent.

Mr Hissan noted that the main event would commence in July 2024, adding that it would go a long way to empower young women to venture into entrepreneurship and trade with other ladies from other African countries.

According to the AYEF president, most of the informal trades in Africa were done by women, stressing that it was time to formalise such tra
des and to adequately equip African women with the needed skills to trade effectively amongst themselves on the continent and even beyond.

He said that the African Trade Queen pageant would not only showcase the beauty of the participants but would also look beyond the physical and intellectual beauty of the women, saying it would showcase the various business prospects on the continent, which would in turn propel development and make the future very bright for African young women entrepreneurs.

He said the event would economically empower the ladies and therefore called on the major stakeholders within the trading and tourism industries to support the event and make Africa economically viable for all as far as trade was concerned.

ECOWAS Court holds training programme on new Electronic Case Management System


The ECOWAS Court of Justice has begun a staff training programme on its new Electronic Case Management System (ECMS) that will digitalise the entire judicial process of the Court from filing to delivery of judgment.

The training is running from from March 10 to 14 2024.

In his opening remarks, Justice Edward Amoako Asante, President of the Court stated that the world was moving towards digitalisation and, therefore, it has become imperative for the Court to move its judicial processes online.

He urged the participating staff members to actively engage in the programme, particularly the live simulation and practice sessions.

He explained that the training was being conducted in batches for staff involved in the case management workflow of the Court, and designed to expose them to the functionality of the ECMS platform and to also elicit feedback to finalise it.

Dr Athanase Atannon, Deputy Chief Registrar and Project Director of the ECMS, informed participants of the objectives and desired outcomes of the
training programme.

He explained that the training would provide judges and staff with relevant information on the use of the ECMS, expose them to their roles in the System through hands-on exercises, and note their observations and suggestions to improve its functionality before the launch of the final product.

He expressed gratitude to the management of the Court for its unwavering support for the adoption of this new work tool to enhance the efficient operation of the Court.

In addition, he said that the Court would organise training for lawyers and other key external stakeholders on the use of the software.

Dr Frederic Drabo, Project Consultant as well as some staff of the ICT unit and Registry Department, who had earlier been trained in the use of the platform, are facilitating the training programme.

There are presentations on the functionality of the new ECMS, role-based access and workflows associated with the system. Participants will also be shown live simulations of the ECMS from e-filing of a
new case to judgment delivery.

The ECMS is designed to standardise the judicial processes of the Court in line with international best practice. When launched, it will eliminate challenges with the use and storage of papers, increase efficiency and performance of the Court, and offer a cost-effective access to the Court by all parties.

Among others, the ECMS has features that allows cases to be filed in the three languages of the Court and can generate analysis and statistics on cases.

Participants at the four-day training programme taking place in Nasarawa State, Nigeria include Honourable Judges of the Court and their Executive Assistants, the Chief Registrar, Directors, Heads of Units, and staff of Research Department. Also present are some interpreters, and staff from the Communication, Protocol and Accounts Units of the Court.

Driver in jail for stealing boss’ GHC162,500.00 clinical items


A driver, who stole GHC162,500.00 worth of clinical items belonging to his boss has been sentenced to four years imprisonment in hard labour by the Accra Circuit Court Four.

Solomon Kofi Addo Yeboah conspired with one Alhassan, who was also employed by their Pakistani boss and is currently on the run, to steal the items.

Yeboah simply admitted that he conspired with Alhassan, thus, he was sentenced to two years for conspiracy and four years for stealing but sentences are to run concurrently.

Police Inspector DaCosta Bobie Ansah told the Court presided over by Mrs Kizita Naa Koowaa Quarshie that Rab Naweiz Khan, the complainant is a Pakistani and a businessman residing at Tse Addo, La, a suburb of Accra.

He said Yeboah, the convict, also lived at Kasoa, as Alhassan, a cook to the complainant, is now at large.

Police Inspector Ansah said Yeboah and Alhassan worked in the complainant’s company that ‘deals in clinical equipment.’

He said on January 18, 2024, Yeboah and Alhassan did conspire to break into th
e complainant’s warehouse located at Tse-Addo and made away with 50 pieces of ultrasound paper notes, five pieces of Diathamy machine, four pieces of suction machine, two ultrasound printers and one computer.

The prosecution said the next day, the complainant lodged a report with the La Police, leading to the arrest of Yeboah whilst Alhassan bolted with the goods.

During the investigation, Police had information about where the items had been kept by Alhassan at Weija, the Court?heard.

He said the Police proceeded to the said location to retrieve the items.

After investigation, Yeboah was charged with the offences and put before the Court as efforts were underway to arrest Alhassan, his accomplice, the Police said.
