Alongside Deputy Permanent Representative Juan Mbomio Ndong Mangue, a substantial team of diplomatic staff from Equatorial Guinea was present in New York for the occasion. According to African Press Organization, the closing session of the 80th assembly started at 11:00 am, where outgoing President Annalena Baerbock of Germany reflected on her term. Baerbock's presidency was characterized by significant geopolitical challenges, demands for institutional reforms, and a focus on international collaboration. Despite some processes lacking unanimous agreement, the vast majority of resolutions were passed, highlighting a unified stance among member states against geopolitical tensions. During the 80th session, the General Assembly hosted 18 high-level meetings an d 116 formal plenary sessions, approving 317 resolutions. Discussions centered on global AI governance, accelerated efforts on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the 2030 target in sight, and institutional reform initiatives under the UN80 Initiative. Baerbock used a sports metaphor to emphasize unity and determination in achieving the SDGs, likening them to goals in a World Cup match. The opening of the 81st session took place at 3:00 pm, where Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh assumed the presidency. Under the theme "Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations that delivers for all," Rahman emphasized the need for the UN to evolve with the times, addressing a deficit in trust and adapting to contemporary global dynamics. Rahman's presidency will focus on several priorities: promoting peace, security, and justice; accelerating progress on the SDGs; enhancing climate resilience; prioritizing human rights and protection; fostering innovation and inclusion; and advocating for renewed mul tilateralism with deep UN reforms. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres praised the outgoing president's achievements and welcomed Rahman, describing the current global context as tumultuous with risks of nuclear escalation, ongoing poverty, and climate issues. Guterres highlighted the forthcoming selection process for the next Secretary-General, set to begin in January 2027, as a key task for this session. In his final address to the Assembly as Secretary-General, Guterres stressed the importance of rebuilding trust in the multilateral system, identifying it as the critical challenge of the era. He urged the Assembly to use diplomacy, dialogue, and collaboration to restore trust in global geopolitics and secure a healthier and more peaceful future for all. With the formal adoption of the work agenda and formation of the Credentials Committee, the General Assembly has embarked on its deliberations, setting the stage for international diplomatic efforts in the upcoming year.
