End of Year Speech: Paul Biya calls for improved governance, announces sanctions on financial misconduct

YAOUNDE: Cameroon's President, Paul Biya, has announced sanctions against perpetrators of financial misconduct. In his 2024 end-of-year address to the nation on December 31st, he emphasized the need for improved governance across all sectors of activity in the country. According to Cameroon News Agency, President Biya stated that improving governance involves intensifying the fight against corruption and the misappropriation of public funds. He noted the importance of legal protection for private investment and land tenure security, areas where abuses have been reported. Biya assured that appropriate sanctions would be imposed on those found guilty of such offenses. The president highlighted the critical need for substantial financial resources to implement essential projects, which have become increasingly scarce and challenging to mobilize due to global and local economic conditions. He underscored the urgency of taking measures to address these financial constraints. President Biya also remarked on Came roon's commitment to achieving the objectives set at the recent Extraordinary Summit of CEMAC Member States, which emphasized the need for structural reforms to ensure fiscal consolidation within the sub-region. Additionally, Biya announced directives for reorganizing the Road Fund to improve the country's capacity to secure funding for road construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance projects. He pointed to upcoming road rehabilitation projects, including the Bekoko-Limbe-Idenau and Mutengene-Buea sections, as well as other long-anticipated projects slated to begin next year.
