Burkina Faso Bans Single-Use Plastic Kits in Public Administrations

Ouagadougou: The use of single-use plastic kits during coffee breaks and lunches is now prohibited in Burkina Faso's public administrations. Since July 9, 2025, this ban has been in effect, with the Secretary General of the Ministry of the Environment reiterating the measure in a letter to the Ministry of Health, urging cooperation in enforcing this initiative.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Sanitation of Burkina Faso has reinforced its stance against plastic pollution by reiterating the ban on single-use plastic kits. Dr. Bourama Kouanda, the Secretary General of the Ministry of the Environment, addressed a letter on August 4, 2025, to his counterpart in the Ministry of Health. In the letter, Dr. Kouanda urged officials to promote local, ecological, and sustainable solutions to replace plastic kits, advocating for environmentally friendly practices.

This measure is part of the broader implementation of Law No. 045-2024/ALT, which was adopted on December 30, 2024, and came into effect on July 9, 2025. The law aims to reduce the environmental impact of plastic packaging by prohibiting the production, importation, marketing, and distribution of disposable plastic bags and kits. It also imposes severe penalties for the abandonment, dumping, or burning of these materials.

The legislation specifically targets plastic packaging and bags smaller than 70 microns, encouraging the promotion of sustainable alternatives. This initiative reflects the Burkinabe authorities' commitment to environmental preservation and a transition towards a sustainable development model, aligning with global objectives to reduce plastic pollution.
