Church Reaches Out to Children with Special Health Needs in Nyahururu

Nairobi: A.C.K Christ the King Cathedral in Nyahururu has launched a charitable initiative aimed at supporting children with special health needs in the town and its surrounding areas.

According to Kenya News Agency, the interdenominational program, run by Zawadi Centre within the Cathedral's grounds, seeks to alleviate the caregiving responsibilities of parents by providing a nurturing environment for their children. This initiative not only supports children with various conditions but also allows caregivers to participate in church services without worry.

Provost Very Rev John Ngenye, who serves as the Patron of Zawadi Centre, shared that the church began this outreach in early July. The program targets children with conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, learning difficulties, and dyslexia. Rev Ngenye emphasized that the initiative was designed to allow caregivers to engage in church activities while their children learn about faith in a manner suited to them.

The program guarantees quality care, with Rev Ngenye assuring parents that their children will receive a holistic, safe, and enjoyable experience. The church aims to emulate the compassionate ministry of Jesus Christ by addressing the needs of the vulnerable in the community. In partnership with organizations like Larche Kenya and St. Martin, the Cathedral is expanding its outreach to provide comprehensive support to children with special health needs.

Ms. Beatrice Wanjiku, the Program Coordinator at Zawadi Centre, mentioned that the initiative, which operates on Sundays from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, began with a single child and has grown to accommodate 14 children. This growth allows more caregivers to attend services, knowing their children are well cared for during that time. The Zawadi Centre thus offers much-needed relief to caregivers, enabling them to partake in their spiritual practices without the added responsibility of caregiving.
