Kajiado: The Kajiado County government, through its Department of Medical Services and Public Health, has expressed strong disapproval of the recent attack on Kitengela Sub-county Hospital during the Saba Saba demonstrations in Kitengela town.
According to Kenya News Agency, Kajiado County Executive Committee Member for Medical Services and Public Health, Alex Kilowua, reported that a group of individuals became unruly after bringing an injured person to the hospital. They intimidated medical personnel and disrupted emergency services at the facility. Kilowua highlighted that the group caused unnecessary panic and interfered with operations, putting the safety of patients and healthcare workers at risk.
Kilowua confirmed that no hospital staff or patients were physically harmed, but emphasized that targeting healthcare institutions undermines public trust and access to essential medical care. He stated that any act threatening the safety of frontline workers or medical care is indefensible and should not occur in society.
He praised the hospital's medical staff for their professionalism during the incident and noted that measures have been taken to enhance security and provide psychosocial support to affected staff. Kilowua urged security agencies to conduct thorough investigations, identify those responsible, and ensure they are held accountable. He stressed the importance of protecting healthcare facilities to maintain public safety and confidence.
The county government remains committed to delivering quality healthcare services and is assessing the damage to ensure uninterrupted service delivery. Kilowua reaffirmed their dedication to serving the community and called on leaders and community members to reject such behavior and promote peace and safety.
Area Member of Parliament, Kakuta Maimai, also condemned the attacks, asserting that hospitals should remain sanctuaries of healing. He praised the police for their swift response and urged protesters to cease destruction and respect institutions serving vulnerable populations.
Kitengela town experienced intense demonstrations, with protestors clashing with police, resulting in several injuries. Despite the chaos, normal services have resumed. Hospital sources reported that the body of Brian Kimutai, 21, who was shot dead, was brought to the hospital.
