Gabon to Swear In Ex-Junta Chief Brice Oligui Nguema as President

Libreville: Gabon's President-elect Brice Oligui Nguema, who led a coup ending 55 years of Bongo family rule, swept polls last month with nearly 95 percent of the vote. He will be sworn in on Saturday and officially takes the presidential reins after leading a 19-month transition government. According to France24.com, the general and former junta leader, who toppled Ali Bongo in August 2023 ending 55 years of dynastic rule by the Bongo family, will officially assume the presidency after a transitional period. The swearing-in ceremony is set to take place at the Angondje stadium and will be the first time the country holds such an event in front of a large audience. Tickets were free for the public to attend the investiture, and the event will feature artistic performances and a military parade followed by a "victory concert" on the Libreville waterfront. In preparation for the inauguration, hundreds of workers have been engaged in cleaning and repainting areas around the main roads leading to the stadium. A uthorities and official media have encouraged citizens to be welcoming in light of the influx of foreign guests, urging residents near the stadium to contribute to the cleaning and beautification efforts. Oligui, 50, faces significant challenges in leading Gabon, an oil-rich country with pressing needs to revamp infrastructure and diversify its economy while managing heavy debt. Key issues include an ageing electricity network prone to frequent outages, youth unemployment at 40 percent, inadequate roads, and a public debt projected to reach 80 percent of GDP this year. During the transition period, Oligui has positioned himself as a "builder," initiating various construction projects and committing to tackling corruption to steer the country towards recovery.
