Mombasa: Police in Mombasa have made a breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking after intercepting six bags containing 4,500 rolls of bhang with a street value of Sh4.5 million. County Police Commander Peter Kimani confirmed that the haul was seized around 8 a.m. during an intelligence-led sting operation along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in the Changamwe area. The consignment originated from a neighbouring country.
According to Kenya News Agency, the police operation identified a lorry trailer, make FAO, with registration number KDH 969C, which was traveling along the targeted road. Upon interception, police officers conducted a thorough search of the vehicle and discovered six bags of cannabis. Further inspection revealed 4,500 rolls of cannabis with a street value of Sh4.5 million.
The vehicle was driven by Mark Maseno, who was apprehended by the police. During interrogation, Maseno disclosed that he had hidden the bhang among bags of potatoes, which he had offloaded along the way. The Anti-Narcotics Unit is currently processing the seized bhang as part of the preparations to arraign the suspect in court.
Commander Kimani emphasized the significance of this seizure, highlighting it as a major step forward in combating drug trafficking. He noted the adverse effects of smoking bhang and reiterated the police department's commitment to scaling up efforts against drug use in Mombasa to reduce its prevalence.
Furthermore, Kimani mentioned that the intercepted vehicle would be taken to court and potentially forfeited to the government, serving as a warning to other vehicle owners against using their vehicles for drug transportation.
