Dar-es-salaam: Burkina Faso's Etalons A' coach Issa Balbon© expressed his disappointment in his team's performance after their narrow defeat to the Mourabitounes of Mauritania in the CHAN Group B match held at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. Despite creating numerous opportunities, Burkina Faso failed to capitalize, resulting in their elimination from the tournament.
According to Burkina Information Agency, coach Balbon© addressed the media in a post-match press conference, highlighting his team's inability to convert chances into goals. He stated, "Offensively, we were non-existent because we had a lot of chances that we didn't capitalize on. That's what was lacking tonight. They were aggressive on the ball but not on the opponent."
Balbon© also voiced concerns regarding the officiating, specifically criticizing South African referee Jelly Alfred's decision to issue a red card. He remarked, "The red card destabilized us. Our player played the ball, the opponent hit him, and the referee showed a red card. I don't know if it was the VAR or the referee who made the decision. I don't think there was a foul."
Beyond the refereeing issues, Balbon© acknowledged shared responsibility for the outcome, citing both player performance and coaching strategies. Despite the setback, he maintained confidence in his squad, stating, "They are the players in form at the moment. I played football and I think that there is often poor form and everything that happens at the highest level. I think these kids have learned a lot and from now on they will be able to compete well."
Striker Yves Koutiama echoed the coach's sentiments, admitting, "Not everything went well. We had to win the match to be able to continue. We lost and we are really disappointed with this defeat and the elimination." He assured fans, "We will continue to work to create beautiful play and be able to finish with goals."
Despite their elimination in the first round, consistent with their past CHAN participations in 2014, 2018, and 2021, Burkina Faso is set to play their final group match against Madagascar on August 16 in Zanzibar. The CHAN Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda 2024, postponed to 2025, is scheduled to take place from August 2 to 30.
