Fons Ask Football Legend Samuel Eto’o to Return Artefacts

Douala: The President of the North West House of Chiefs, HRM Fon Yakum Kevin Teuvih, has publicly disassociated the region’s Fons from the recent coronation of Cameroonian football legend Samuel Eto’o Fils as ‘Fon of Fons’ or ‘NTUMFOYN’.

According to Cameroon News Agency, a coronation ceremony was held on Friday, January 17, in Douala, where Samuel Eto’o was reportedly crowned ‘NTUMFOYN’, meaning ‘Fon of Fons’, by Fon JU Wilson, a 3rd-class Fon from Koshin village. Fon JU Wilson claimed to represent the North West Fons during this event.

In response, Fon Yakum Kevin Teuvih, President of the House of Chiefs, declared the coronation unauthorized, stating it violated Law No. 2019/024, which designates the House of Chiefs as the legitimate authority on matters of the region’s cultural heritage. He emphasized that there is only one ‘Fon of Fons’, H.E. Paul Biya, the Head of State, and that regional titles should only be awarded by constituted authorities. He underlined the importance of Fons as custodians of cu
ltural heritage and highlighted the platform provided by the Head of State for Fons’ voices to be heard. He urged individuals to refrain from participating in or endorsing actions that desecrate the culture.

Additionally, North West Fons based in the Littoral region, including the Fon of Bafmeng and Bemesseng, have condemned the coronation. They emphasized that traditional titles and regalia hold significant cultural and symbolic meaning, and their conferment requires careful consideration and consultation among Fons. They have demanded the immediate return of the traditional artefacts used in the ceremony.
