The international community must respect the will of the sovereign people of Equatorial Guinea

What does the international community want for the Republic of Equatorial Guinea? That was the question posed by Anatolio Ndong Mba, Republic of Equatorial Guinea Ambassador Permanent Representative before the UN in New York, in an interview with TVGE. Ndong Mba, who has made no secret of his dissatisfaction with certain derogatory statements from the international community in relation to the recent presidential elections in our country, also briefly told the story of how the governing party in the Republic of Equatorial Guinea came into being.

While being interviewed by TVGE, in an effort to educate those who are still unaware of the PDGE’s history, and for those who already know it to fine-tune their observations, the ambassador went back a few years, saying first of all the following.

“The PDGE emerged from the process of Democratic Trial advocated by H. E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, in order to implement a multi-party system in the Republic of Equatorial Guinea. Since then, the PDGE has been a pioneering party, the party of the people, and has been working, is working and continues to work with total coherence for the good of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea”.

“In fact” the diplomat continued, “I have had the good fortune to participate recently in the campaign for the presidential, legislative and municipal elections. And I have to say with great satisfaction that I have never seen a campaign like this before. It was a demonstration in which all social strata took part (young people, women, old people, the elderly) freely and with enthusiasm. And as we watched on television, in every corner of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, in every district of the country, the feeling was the same and the support was massive.

And what does that show? It shows what our charismatic leader Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has been doing since he took on the destiny of our nation on 3rd August 1979. In fact he has allowed the party to reap what he has sown at the head of the PDGE over the years. In other words, the course of the campaign was an unequivocal prelude to the outcome of the elections. The 94.9%, almost 95%, obtained by the PDGE in the latest polls is clear proof of this and shows the true situation, despite what is said by those who always see everything positive that happens in our country in a negative, contradictory way.

The people turned out to vote en masse despite the campaign to stop people firstly from registering and secondly from taking part in the vote. The opposite was the case. That shows the will of the people of Equatorial Guinea to live in peace, to live serenely. That means recognising the fine work of H. E., the President of the Republic, the President Elect. Work that is fully recognised. And the most curious thing, in fact, is the involvement of young people in this campaign, in this electoral process.

It is very important for our party. Young people have been fully involved in the campaign; they have been fully involved in voting massively and positively in favour of the PDGE candidate.

Now, what is regrettable, and I say this as Ambassador Permanent Representative of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea before the United Nations, is that several inconsistencies, incoherence and a lack of logic can be seen in certain international postures. Back in 2011 we witnessed one such decision regarding the Libya issue, and today that has degenerated into everything we know about armed groups in West Africa.

All in all, a destabilised country that has lost many people and where many people have lost their lives, and it is a source of regret. It is thus difficult to understand how it is that countries that have diplomatic representations in our country have witnessed first hand the course of the campaign and the voting process, where there has been no coercion whatsoever. Where the forces of law and order and the military have not been at the polling stations, but at the designated distance; where people have voted in the booths in secret in order to express their right to vote.

Where there have been counts at each polling station where the representatives of the political parties have taken part and the minutes have been signed. Where a result has been published that is a true reflection of what this electoral process has been like, and then they come out with statements branding the process as one of violations and lack of transparency. Then one has to ask, What do they really want? And I ask myself, What does the international community want for the Republic of Equatorial Guinea? Destabilisation? Disorder? Death?

Because the people of Equatorial Guinea want peace, they want continuity and they want dialogue. The people of Equatorial Guinea want their leader. That is something that the international community must understand once and for all. That the entire people of Equatorial Guinea are behind and support H. E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. If any doubts exist or existed in the minds of some, in the latest campaign and elections that took place, those doubts must have been dispelled. In our country’s elections, there were observers from the African Union, observers from the Economic Community of Central African States, in addition to observers from civil society. The pronouncement and verdict were clear. They were at the polling stations, they followed the voting process, but despite all this, comments emerge from some Western countries.

It is incomprehensible. How can one judge a process by pretending to have the truth in the face of international observers who were there, who visited the polling stations and who witnessed the entire campaign process, the entire voting process and, finally, the counting process during these elections? The result emerging from the count is the true picture, and there is no other. Indeed, the PDGE celebrated this well-deserved victory in style. This victory is a further guarantee that the Republic of Equatorial Guinea will continue to develop and will continue to live in peace and harmony, with continuity and dialogue. Because 14 political parties entered into a coalition with the PDGE. The leaders of these parties see the reality in the country and as a consequence of this tangible reality, they joined up with the PDGE. That is realistic politics.

And the result opens up excellent, brilliant prospects for the future of our country. The electoral process has been a celebration, and people, both nationally and internationally, have no choice but to recognise that fact.

Once again, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the people of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea on their great political maturity in massively supporting the people’s candidate.

I wish to congratulate the President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, H. E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, on this huge renewal of the people’s trust in his distinguished person, because it is well-deserved. Congratulations are also due to all PDGE candidates for the Senate, Parliament and municipalities. Congratulations are due to the entire Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea and to its Secretary General. I would like to congratulate the director of the national campaign and his deputies, H. E. Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, Vice-President of the Republic Charged with Defence and National Security, for the great work and deployment throughout the country in support of the PDGE campaign.

This is, or has been, the election in a country in which the people voted en masse for their leader and their candidate. The elections were followed by international observers. Trying to undermine that fact does not really illustrate the point of those undermining countries or international organisations making judgements that do not match reality. Thus, from our Permanent Mission before the United Nations in New York and before the national media, I would ask those countries to congratulate the people of Equatorial Guinea. To congratulate H. E. the President of the Republic and our party on the great political maturity that the people have seen.

We know that the electoral processes in other countries result in of killings and violence. I don’t know if this is what is wanted for our country in order to make people happy. We have seen a celebratory process during the campaign. There have been no reports of mishaps. On polling day, we saw how everyone went to the stations voluntarily and many had to wait hour after hour for their turn to vote. This is political and civic maturity within the population that deserves congratulations. It is the sovereign will, it is the expression of the sovereign will of the people of Equatorial Guinea, and the international community must respect this sovereign will.

I would also like to congratulate the national media: RTVGE, ASONGA and all the nation’s official news media, for the excellent work done during this election campaign, covering the activities of all candidates without exception and showing everything that was happening.

I must also congratulate the Electoral Board, the Minister for the Interior and all members of the National Board for the commendable work carried out throughout the electoral process, which was a complete success”.
